Ogasawara Ryu Yabusame Hawaii in 2026
June, 2026
The series of event of Ogasawara ryu 850 Years of Heritage were well received, and now we are working hard to bring Yabusame to Hawaii in 2026. The planned performance of Yabusame, led by Kiyomoto Ogasawara, the 32nd generation Master of the Ogasawara-ryu discipline, is a rare opportunity to see one of Japan’s most venerable cultural traditions. For more than 700 years the Ogasawara family have been instructors in Japanese Archery, Horse mounted archery, and court etiquette to Shoguns as well as samurais; continuously passing on its teachings through the family lineage until today.
Yabusame is usually performed in Japan as a part of sacred rituals; with performers wearing garbs representing the era, such as Heian, Kamakura, Muromachi, and Edo. It is an educational, rarely-seen demonstration of the traditions and values of Bushido – the moral code of conduct for Samurai. Ogasawara’s Yabusame was seen by King Charles III and Emperor Naruhito at the Japan Festival in London in 2001.
It was first introduced to Hawaii in 1996 at the Honolulu Festival.
